How it’s made: knitwear

Friday, June 4th, 2010

one of my favorite television shows is Discovery Channels “How it’s made”. An incredibly simple idea, but highly entertaining to discover how a whole range of objects are made. Ranging from electric fuses to Canadian porcelain, guitars or hammers, I’ve seen them all.

What makes it so fascinating to me, is the fact that it gives me a new insight into everyday objects. I see them with new eyes because I can see how much work goes into making them or how ingeniously some things are made.

But I haven’t seen a how it’s made about knitwear yet. Which is a bit of a shame, because it would make a good episode. So we’ve decided to make our own “how it’s made…knitwear” episode featuring a glimpse of our new collection, enjoy!

step_001

step 1: It all starts with yarns. In this case a really nice Merino wool, dyed red. The yarn is slowly unrolled by the machine and fed into its belly.

step_002

Step 2: The yarn is then fed through a series of rollers and clamps which makes sure the yarn is tensioned correctly before being knitted.

step_003

Step 3: Once it achieves the right tension the yarn then goes inside the machine where it then moves inside the yarn feeder.

step_004

Step 4: This is the knitting bed.

step_005

Step 5: The knitting bed consists of hundreds of knitting needles (the silver cylinders you see at the bottom), which move up and down depending on the pattern being knitted. The yarn feeder guides the yarn past all the needles which knits it together. Each needle knits one vertical column of loops.

step_006

Step 6: the knitted end result then slowly appears at the bottom of the machine.

step_008

Step 7: And there you have it: a nicely knitted piece of fabric ready to be ironed, cut and sewn into a full garment.

And now you know how it’s made!

Mimoods decorates the shop windowetalage_no_mimoods_01

Today it was our turn to decorate the shop window at the NieuweOntwerpers.nl in Rotterdam. So for us that could only mean 1 things: have fun with our collection and origami on a large scale!

nieuwe_ontwerpers_shop_01

NieuweOntwerpers.nl is a store completely dedicated to new designers. Located in the center of Rotterdam, it provides designers with a great platform to present and sell their collection to the public. The shop has a really nice vibe and we are really happy we can sell our “cup of tea” collection there.

roberta

“The devil is in the details” is a phrase that keeps going round and round in my head the last couple of weeks. Every day seems to consist of chancing the smallest tiniest details in our web shop. It might be a button that is not properly aligned, or something as dumb as a spelling mistake. Each day I see something I don’t like yet, or think can be done better.

But sometimes, little ideas become big ideas, and before you know it, you end up with all sorts of little fun extra’s to your shop. The picture above is our friend Roberta, who helped us tremendously by being our model. It all started with us having the idea to show the Snow Flower Scarf in its natural habitat: snow! Not entirely coincidental it has been snowing since Friday, so what better opportunity to have a photo shoot? Thanks to Roberta’s modeling, we ended up with a perfect picture for our homepage. Then it just came naturally, like a snowball, dropped from the top of a mountain becoming an avalanche on the bottom. So the whole store was soon rebuild. Be sure to visit and let us know what you think about it!

A happy, perfect, succesful and lovely 2010 to everyone!

Folding ourselves

us

Since we decided to make out fashion models out of paper, we couldn’t leave ourselves behind. But trying to find the right papers that fit with your personality is still quite a challenge. Especially since we build up quite a collection of origami papers these last months. So here we are, Spela & Andreas as origami, being the faces of Mimoods.

And being from paper is great I can tell you. You can just change yourself so easily. Getting a different hairstyle, just takes a different paper and some glue.

A thousand and one things

The_last_details_001

In between participating in workshops, knitting scarves and folding origami, we’ve been busy making a web-store to start selling our handmade scarves.

The_last_details_002

So last week we have been photographing all the scarves in our studio (part-time studio in fact, most of the time it functions as a canteen or a music rehearsal room) and dressing them on our origami top models.

But after a hectic week, we are almost done and tomorrow we’ll present our new scarf collection and launch our web-store. So see you tomorrow!

modetent_2009_001

We had our very first street sale with Mimoods at the Modetent in Rotterdam. This is an event organized by the shop Nieuwe Ontwerpers. Because we are going to start selling our clothes at their store, we were asked if we wanted to participate in the street sale. All in all it was a great day (unfortunately with not so great weather), because it was the first time we could show people Mimoods and see if they liked our things. Thankfully we got nothing but great reactions and a lot of interest for our knitwear. A big “thank you” to everybody that bought, or wanted to buy, but couldn’t (next time we’ll get a pin-machine), a Mimoods piece!

We are busy preparing the final little details for the Modetent #4 tomorrow. It is going to be our first street sale, so it’s quite exciting for us. We’ll be selling a variety of items: unique sweaters, t-shirts, leggings, IPod socks, and because (unfortunately) autumn and winter are slowly approaching, also a lot of scarf’s and hats.

If you are in the neighbourhood of Rotterdam, come visit us and who knows, you might find something you’d like ;)
